CANDELABRA, 2022

Stoneware, wax, candles. 13″L x 13″W x 11″H. Mexico City, Mexico. 2022.

Working with raw clay and wax in a time sensitive nature, Candelabra was inspired by the wild fires raging in New Mexico in 2022. The ephemerality of the work, the interchange between human intervention and natural processes, and the ultimate futility of the efforts to create the piece even as the fire of the candles dwindled and disrupted the work, connects to the harsh nature of forest fires as a natural phenomenon, and the role that humans have played over time in shaping the relationship of fire to land. This piece was visually inspired by traditional Mexican craft, most notably Oaxacan candlewax art, and Mexican gothic aesthetic. Candelabra was made while a resident artist at Recipiente Estudio in Mexico City.
